When we first saw the house back in June 2006, we were taken with the woodwork in the foyer and dining room, the size of the bedrooms, and the great flow from room to room. We saw it on a Sunday and by Tuesday night it was ours. When we came over on Wednesday to take pictures, we were shocked to find (1) the bathroom was uglier than we remembered, (2) the doors were in really bad shape, and (3) the back bedroom didn't have a door at all! What kind of home doesn't have doors on the bedrooms? Ours, apparently.
Since movng in Alan has been working hard to rectify all of these situations. In the fall he removed the bathroom doors and began sanding them down to see if they were salvageable. While the wood, where in good shape, was beautiful and would have looked amazing stained, where the wood was in bad shape it was in AWFUL shape and beyond repair. At that point, Alan decided to clean up the original hardware, re-paint the doors, and put 'em back up.
It's definitely a huge improvement over how they looked previously, but unfortunately, didn't solve one of the biggest issues we faced - the lack of a door on the back bedroom. Jenny and Nora are coming to visit for a week and we *needed* a door for that bedroom. The strange thing is, we have multiple doors sitting in the basement, but we don't know what they go to or why they're even there. In the end, I asked Alan to remove the door from the laundry room and put it up in the back. He had to do some sanding and the latch doesn't work perfectly, but we have privacy! Hopefully at some point he'll be able to clean up the handle and make everything work because it really is gorgeous.
